Please note, there are some things that FIG does not do. If you're having trouble with your personal email, the storage server, etc., please see Academic Computing. FIG deals with club stuff - but feel free to contact us!

Request New Services

Get Club Webspace

  1. Enter your Haverford Eudora name, 8 characters - required
  2. Choose a name for your website. We suggest using your club name (or an abbreviated version or acronym), but this isn't required. What is required is that the name be no more than 8 characters, and that it at least reflect what your club does.
    Website Name -- students.haverford.edu/{name}
  3. Who should be authorized to make changes to this website? Please list only those people likely to doing the web work, not the entire roster of your group! Use Eudrora names.
    Authorize (1)
    Authorize (2)
    Authorize (3)

  4. Read the Following Terms of Use
    • Your web pages reflect positively or negatively on the College and on your group. When you put material on the World Wide Web, you are essentially publishing it for anybody in the world to read. Although Haverford takes no responsibility for any information provided by groups in group home pages, people outside the community (including high school students applying to Haverford, their parents, and Haverford alumni) will still connect these materials with Haverford. It is expected that all groups producing pages will keep this fact in mind and maintain their pages accordingly. Groups dealing with confidential issues or Haverford-only issues may wish to restrict their group's pages to on-campus access only. Please talk with FIG if you wish to have your group's pages in a restricted area.
    • Think twice before placing personal information on group pages. Your group page is open to anybody in the world with a computer and an Internet connection. Publishing personal information such as addresses or telephone numbers may attract unwanted attention. If you would like to solicit feedback, providing your E-mail address is probably the best way to do so.
    • Respect the privacy of others. Do not provide information about other people, including their name, without their knowledge and consent.
    • Content of web pages must reflect current state and federal laws, as well as Haverford College policies. Haverford respects the rights of groups and individuals to express themselves freely and will, in general, not exercise control over the contents of group home pages. However, content which is prohibited by state or federal law, such as copyrighted materials used without permission (including software which is not available for free public distribution) or obscene materials, will not be tolerated and may cause your home page to be removed from the system.
    • Group page content is subject to campus standards and regulations already in place, such as the Honor Code and JSAAP. Any violations of these policies will be dealt with in accordance with the procedures already in place for such situations. Accordingly, all pages must contain the name of the group and the name or E-mail address of the site author to ensure accountability.
    • Group pages must not contain commercial materials for personal profit. As with any college-supplied resource, personal pages are not to be used for personal gain. However, group pages may be used for group promotions and fundraisers, as long as ALL proceeds go towards the group and its activities.
    • For security reasons, only authorized users may access a group's webspace Groups usually appoint one person as their web author. This person's account will be linked to the group's web space and allow them access to the web server using their personal username and Eudora password. If another person needs to access the group's pages, they must contact FIG.
    • Groups MUST update their respective pages EVERY SEMESTER. The creation of a group page takes a large investment of time, as well as college resources. To maintain quality and effectiveness, group page revisions are essential. Outdated pages may be removed without notice.
    I have read, and agree to abide by these rules.
  5. SUBMIT your request. Account may take up to a week. In most cases you will want to request an email address as well.

Request an Email Address

  1. What type of email account do you need? If this is your first address, it should probably correspond to your webspace name. E.g., a group with the site http://students.haverford.edu/myclub/ should get the email address myclub@GO.haverford.edu. Note the '@GO! You do not control any addresses '@haverford.edu'. Instead, all mail to 'haverford.edu' gets forwarded to the same name '@GO.haverford.edu'. This is why, unless you are doing something special (like a listserv or discussion group) you need to use exactly the same name for your email and webspace - which, of course, must be no greater than 8 characters. This is what FIG calls a simple alias.
  2. Contact FIG by emailing fig@go.haverford.edu. Tell us the name of the list you want, and the initial password you would like. FIG will create the address within a week, and email'@haverford.edu' will begin forwarding to your club '@GO.haverford.edu' as soon as the corresponding website is setup. Note: If there is no corresponding website (if you are creating ONLY an email address), only "youraddress@GO.haverford.edu" will function. The @GO is critical. Only groups with webspace may have the ACC create an @haverford.edu alias.
  3. Update your list! When FIG creates the account, you will be notified that you must log on to the web interface and finish setting up your account. From here on in, you are responsible for updating your membership (who mail forwards to) and passing on this information to whoever leads your club next year.

Create a Mailing List

Mailman is FIG's list software. It allows you to set up discussion groups, and lists for your group announcements. With a proper authority, you can create a new mailing list at: http://spruce.fig.haverford.edu/cgi-bin/mailman/create

Request a Shell Account

If you know what a shell account is and would like one, you should come meet FIG! Among other things, your shell account may be used to host cgi scripts on our ELM server - we would like to get to know you first, however. Contact us below and tell us what you're after.

Have FIG Build Your Website

If you need a website but don't have the faintest idea how to design one, FIG is generally happy to do it for you. You should still submit a request for webspace and, if you like, an email address (above). Contact FIG and let us know what you need - one of our members will return your mail directly, and negotiate a pay rate with your club.

Access & Update Your Site

Via Local Networks (Apple Talk or LAN, on campus only)

This option is easier than FTP for many. Be aware that every Haverford student (and club!) automatically has four folders on Haverford's storage server:

private_readonly, private, public_readwrite, public_web

Only 'public_web' is available through FTP - but by using the 'Connect to Server' function on a Mac (appletalk) or Network Neighborhood on a PC, one can reach the same folder. Excellent instructions are available from the ACC through this site. Keep in mind that, instead of networking to your folder, you will network to your club's folder. E.g., Instead of /users/j/jdoe/public_web, surf to: /users/s/schords/public_web.

You will still need to authorized by FIG to make changes (email us) - in fact, if these four folders seem not to exist, that is because you do not have access rights to view them.

Lastly, the rules about workflow outlined above under 'FTP' apply here as well. Download the entire site to your hard-drive, use Dreamweaver or another editor to change these local files and, when you are finished, copy the files back to the remote server. It is not a bad idea to make backups!

Via FTP (Mac or PC)
  1. Are your authorized? First things first. If you've submitted a request for a new website or spoken with FIG to get you authorization, that should be fine. Until you are specifically granted web access to a group's site, you should not expect to able to log in. If you're not sure whether you were set up, contact FIG with the form below and ask us.
  2. Pick an FTP client - this is a piece of software can ferry information back and forth between your own computer (where you'll be working on HTML files) and the remote computer, which actually serves them to folks surfing the web. You have options. Check your computer for WS_FTP (Windows), Fetch (Mac), or something similar. You can download these from the ACC. NOTE: - if you plan on using Dreamweaver to design your site, which is recommended, it has this FTP client built in. You'll still need the information below, but check out this ACC Deamweaver Tutorial on information about how to set it all up.
  3. Make a connection with the ACC server. This is the computer that serves your files - you can access it by knowing the host address, user name, and password. One you're logged in, you should also provide a working directory - that is, the 'folder' where all of your stuff is stored. Enter the following information into your FTP client:
    • Host: storage.haverford.edu
    • User login: {your Eudora name}
    • Password: {your Eudora password}
    • Work (initial) Directory: /users/{m}/{mygroup}/public_web/
      please note: the {m} corresponds to the first letter of your group website name
      the {my group} corresponds to your group name
      you must use the first backslash '/' and underscore '_' between 'public' and 'web'.
  4. Download the site. It is a good idea to work on the files on your *own* computer. To do so, you should download the entire folder from the remote server (that you have just logged into) to your own hard drive. If multiple folks are updating the site, it's a good idea to do this every time, just in case they've changed some files online, for which you have the old, obsolete versions on your computer. Many FTP clients let you click and drag files to your hard-drive.
  5. Edit. We suggest Dreamweaver - downloadable from the ACC - but if you are NOT using a 'point and click' type of software, we'll assume you know what you're doing here. If you've no idea what to do with HTML (or what that is), you can always ask FIG to design or edit your site for you. We do charge - but not a lot.
  6. Troubleshooting. If you have trouble making a connection or copying files between, please contact us through the form below and include all of the information requested above (excepting password): the host name you entered, user name, initial directory, and your FTP client. We will be in touch.

Manage Your Email & Listserv Accounts

  • If you forgot your administration password contact FIG through the submission form below and ask us to reset it. If you uncertain that your group even has an email or listserv, it is easy to check. Go to http://go.haverford.edu/mail/admin/{your_group} and - if the address exists - you will be prompted for a password.
  • If you need information about YAK's many options, check the YAK Owners Manual.
